- Paul Shepard
- Best known book is "Pleistocene Paradigm"
- "The desert is the environment of revelation genetically and physiologically alien, sensorily austere, esthetically abstract, historically inimical." "To the deserts go prophets and hermits; through deserts go pilgrims and exiles." (page 25)
- this author and these quotations I use seem to connect with Chris MCcandless through his journey while he was living in the desert and living with some pretty interesting people, some types of people that Paul Shepard listed
- "Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible." This is one of my favorite quotes because it is saying, start from scratch, then start doing harder stuff, and then you will be able to conquer anything once you do the harder stuff and succeed at it. I think Chris would like this quote because this kind of states what he did for a long time in life. Yes, he would get it.

- Henry David Thoreau
- best known for the book "Walden"
- "If the day and night are such that you greet them with joy, and life emits a fragrance like flowers and sweet scented herbs, is more elastic, more starry, more immortal, - that is your success." "The greatest gains and values are farthest from being appreciated. We easily come to doubt if they exist." (page 47)
- These quotes relate to Chris because he didn't take any day for granted, lived every day to the fullest, no matter what. These quotes are saying not too and Chris definitely didn't.
- "No matter the circumstances that you may be going through, just push through it." I love this quote because it says to never ever give up in life no matter what you're going through. I think Chris would enjoy this quote because he never gave up, he kept pushing along in life, just trying to survive. Yes I think he would get it.

- Mark Twain
- The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
- "There was some books... One was Pilgrim's Progress, about a man that left his family, it didn't say why." (page 61)
- This quote connects with the story of Chris because he never told his family he was leaving, or anyone.
- "My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style." I like this quote because it tells you to experience life in a big picture instead of staying sheltered from everything that you could enjoy in life. I think Chris would like this quote because it somewhat explains his life. He might get it.
